Echo, Carotid & Arterial Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to examine the heart or blood vessels. Echocardiogram, carotid, and arterial studies answer different questions, so your cardiologist selects the examination that fits your symptoms and history.

About this service

These related ultrasound examinations look at different parts of your cardiovascular system. An echocardiogram evaluates the heart’s structure, valves, and pumping function. A carotid ultrasound examines arteries in the neck that carry blood toward the brain. An arterial ultrasound assesses selected arteries and their blood flow. A probe and gel on the skin allow sound waves to create images. Your clinician decides which study is needed; they are not automatically performed together.

What to expect

  1. Confirm which ultrasound examination has been ordered.

  2. Rest while a probe moves over the area being examined.

  3. Review the findings and any follow-up with your clinician.

Before your visit

Ask the office which area will be examined and whether that study has specific preparation requirements. Wear clothing that allows access to the examination area. Confirm medication instructions with your clinician.
