About this service

The autonomic nervous system helps control functions such as heart rate and blood pressure without conscious effort. Autonomic testing assesses selected responses to help investigate possible problems with this regulation. Depending on the assessment ordered, measurements may be taken during breathing or position changes. There are several types of autonomic tests, and not every test is needed for every patient. The office will confirm the specific evaluation and explain how the findings fit your symptoms.

What to expect

  1. Review symptoms and the specific tests ordered.

  2. Follow supervised instructions while responses are measured.

  3. Discuss the findings in the context of your medical history.

Before your visit

Confirm which autonomic tests are planned and request the office’s instructions for food, drinks, activity, and medicines. Requirements vary by test. Do not stop or change medication without your clinician’s direction.
